My name is Abe Akihito, and I am a member of the Steering Committee for the 16th World Kendo Championships（16WKC）. Actually, as the youngest member of the committee, I am doing my best to keep up with the play and make sure that my contribution in this important role is useful. Next year, 16WKC will be held at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, 45 years after the 1st WKC was convened there in 1970. We are tasked with ensuring that 16WKC meets the expectations of Japanese kendo aficionados and the kenshi who will travel from all around the globe to attend. To this end, our committee holds regular meetings in which passionate discussions last for over three hours each time.
My role is to oversee IT and communications. With regards to IT, I have been given the task of setting up a special homepage to increase awareness of the 16WKC schedule for the end of May 2015. Also, I will be collaborating with the Information Committee to organize a system utilizing the latest technology to stream matches live through the internet when the tournament is in progress. This will enable all people at the venue including spectators, competitors and staff, as well as people in their homes and offices all around the world to keep tabs on what is happening quickly and efficiently.
With regards to “communication” we will be designing tools to promote the tournament such as posters and other methods of information dissemination, and also creating programs and ID cards necessary for the duration of the actual tournament. There are many things that need to be implemented, but even though this is the premium event for world kendo, we do not have access to a huge budget of the likes of the Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled for 2020. For our event to be a resounding success, we need to make the best use of our limited resources, and will also need to call on the assistance of kendo enthusiasts reading these reports. We ask you all to help us get the word out about 16WKC.
There are less than 400 days left until the event. Given that 16WKC will be held at the same venue as the 1st WKC, the upcoming event could be seen as “going back to the origins.” As kendo has spread so far and wide around the world since then, this tournament will provide us with a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the original merits of kendo, and the future direction kendo is pointing us in.
この度、第16回世界剣道選手権大会の実行委員を拝命致しました阿部と申します。委員の中では最年少ですので皆様の足を引っ張らぬように大会の成功に向けて精進したいと考えています。来年の第16回大会は、第1回世界大会開催の地、日本武道館で45年ぶりに行われるとあって、海外の剣士も胸が高鳴っていることでしょう。はるばる世界各国からやってくる剣士のためにも、また日本の剣道愛好家の皆様に向けても記憶に残る大会にするべく、実行委員会では毎回3時間を超える熱い議論が繰り広げられています。
さて、私が関わらせてもらっているパートは、大きく「IT」と「コミュニケーション」の二つになります。まず「IT」に関してですが、来年5月末の大会開催に向けて、なるべく多くの皆様に大会の存在や情報を知っていただけるように、インターネット上に大会の特設ホームページを開設するなどの準備を進めています。また大会当日には試合の模様をインターネットでライブ中継したり、結果を観客や選手・スタッフ、そして仕事場やご自宅から観戦している皆様に正確かつ迅速に提供する方法を、最新のテクノロジーなども考慮しながら情報委員会と連携して開発中です。
もう一方の「コミュニケーション」に関しては、ポスターなどを含めた大会の告知方法の企画立案や、プログラム、IDカードなど大会開催期間中に必要なコミュニケーションツールのデザインなどになります。実現したいことは多々あります。しかし、剣道界最大規模の大会といえども東京オリンピックほどの予算は全くありません。限られた中で大会を最大限に盛り上げるには、選択と集中、それに、これをお読みになっている全国の剣道家の皆様のお力が必要です。是非周囲の皆様に大会の存在を伝えていただければ幸いです。
当日まで残すところ400日余り。第1回大会の地での開催は、「初心」に立ち返る大会ともいえます。世界中に剣道が広まっている今だからこそ、私たちは剣道本来の素晴らしさや、剣道が指し示す未来を伝えられる大会にしたいと思っています。
