We have only seven months left until the championship. On the Internet, the WKC Countdown Photo Contest where we introduce kendo-themed photos together with a countdown timer, is extremely popular. Many of you must be enjoying the photos that are sent in every day.
Did you notice, by the way, that the photo that came in on October 4 was different from the rest?
It was a rather antique-looking close-up photo of the Nijo-jo Castle in Kyoto. To tell you the truth, this is the cover photo of the program brochure for the International Goodwill Kendo Tournament which was held on October 4, 1967. According to the program brochure, people from 13 countries and regions participated. In addition to team and individual matches, the Nippon Kendo Kata was performed by Hanshi Mochida Seiji and Mori Torao, and koryu kata by Hanshi Sasamori Junzo and Ishida Kazuto, the second chairman of the All Japan Kendo Federation. Exhibition matches were held between Hanshi Tsurumi Iwao and Nakakura Kiyoshi, as well as representatives from Hawaii, Brazil, Republic of China, etc.
It was a great event that brought all the prominent kendoka together in the name of friendship. Through kendo, they tried to enhance global friendships, and it seems that the success of this event led to the first WKC in 1970, three years later. As for the 16WKC, I would like it to be not just about a championship, but would like to go back to basics and make it about friendship. I hope all the participants will be able to share the joy of kendo throughout the three days of the championship.
New official items
Two new 16WKC official items will be sold soon. One is a paper folder which has the championship logo on the front and lists all the years and venues for the WKC since the first one. The other is a tenugui which shows an undyed logo of the championship. There are two types: one with just the logo, and one that also comes with the name of the championship written in Japanese. Both will become available from November 3, at the venue and the online shop.
世界大会まで残すところ7カ月余りとなりました。インターネット上では、当日までの残り日数を剣道の写真とともに紹介する「世界大会カウントダウンフォトコンテスト」が大変好評です。毎日投稿される写真を眺めながら、大会への期待感を膨らませている方も多いのではないでしょうか？
その写真の中で、10月4日のものだけ、他とは少し毛色が違っていたことはお気づきでしょうか？
京都・二条城の側面をクローズアップで撮影した、やや古めかしい写真です。これは実は1967年10月4日に日本武道館で開催された「国際親善剣道大会」のプログラム表紙なのです。プログラムによれば、参加したのは13の国・地域。個人戦と団体戦以外にも持田盛二範士と森寅雄範士による日本剣道形や、笹森順造範士と石田和外全剣連第2代会長による古流の形の演武、それに鶴海岩夫範士―中倉清範士やハワイ、ブラジル、中華民国などの代表剣士による模範試合が行われたようです。
今見ると身震いする程の豪華な顔ぶれですね。錚々たる面々が「親善」との名を冠した大会に集まり、剣道を通して国際的な親睦を深めようとした試みでした。この成功がきっかけとなり、3年後の1970年に第1回世界剣道選手権大会が開催される運びとなったようです。来年の16回大会も「チャンピオンシップ」だけでなく、初心である「フレンドシップ」を忘れず、剣道をする喜びを参加者全員で分ち合えるような3日間にしていきたいと考えています。
新グッズ発売
16WKC公式グッズが新たに2種類発売されます。一つは和紙製のファイルです。表面には大会ロゴ、裏面には第1回大会からの開催年と開催地を印刷しました。もう一つは大会ロゴを染め抜いた手拭です。大会ロゴだけをシンプルに配したものと、大会名称も日本語で入れた2タイプをご用意しています。どちらも11月3日の全日本剣道選手権大会の会場やオンラインショップで発売開始予定です。
