Getting Ready for 16WKC! Steering Committee Report No.10さあ! 16WKCへ向けて実行委員会報告 10

The WKC Countdown Photo Contest, where we introduce kendo-themed photos together with a countdown timer, is still extremely popular. Normally, we show carefully selected photos from all over the world, but for just a few days starting November 1, we started introducing some photos that AJKF possesses to promote the championship.

The photo we picked for November 1, 209 days until the championship, was of Kawazoe Tetsuo. He won the All Japan Kendo Championship at only at the age of 21, when he still belonged to Kokushikan University. He was a jodan expert, and his victory at such a young age shocked the entire kendo population. Incidentally, two days later, Yuya Takenouchi, who is also a 21-year-old student, became the new Japanese champion as a student, the first time in 43 years. I know it was just a coincidence, but I felt there was a connection there.

On the day of the AJKC, we promoted the WKC in many ways. At the WKC booth, we sold official items. The two kinds of tenugui that we started selling that day were particularly popular. All of the items are available at the online shop as well.

The highlight of our promotional activities that day was unveiling the main graphic of the poster done by Mr. Inoue Takehiko, the renowned manga artist. A big poster was hung by the reception counter on the first floor of the Nippon Budokan, and we prepared a limited number of small flyers. Many people must have seen the big poster inside the Kudanshita station after the AJKC, which had been posted since that afternoon. The design has an even bigger impact than the draft design, featuring an elaborate image of a kenshi’s piercing stare. We are going to introduce the design together with Mr. Inoue’s interview in next month’s edition of “Kenso”.

We have less than 200 days until the championship. We will continue making preparations for the championship, and carry over the excitement from the AJKC triggered by the magnificent achievement of the first student victory in 43 years, to the WKC held in Tokyo again after 45 years.
